What is FSC?
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council®. FSC is a global non-profit organization that works to spread responsible forestry worldwide through certification of forests and companies and labeling of products. FSC ensures that wood comes from responsibly managed FSC-certified forests and other responsible sources such as Recycling. An FSC-certified forest must meet high requirements for socially, economically and environmentally responsible forest management. This means that with FSC you are helping to look after the forests for current and future generations, and the people and animals that live in them.
What difference does FSC make
In an FSC-certified forest, you know that the forest area will be the same generation after generation.
Rare and endangered species and their habitats are protected.
In parts of the forest, there is no commercial logging, and parts of the forest are managed specifically with the aim of preserving and promoting biodiversity.
Natural streams, wetlands and wide areas must be protected, and the forest owner must take care of the water quality.
The rights of indigenous people must be respected and the forest owner must contribute financially to projects that benefit the local community (examples are access to medical care, schooling for children, water etc.).
The workers in the forests must be trained and have proper working conditions (eg safety equipment and pay).
FSC wood is legally harvested and traded on normal market terms.
